Interview With Matt Dalton: The Advantage of Working with a Technical Recruiter for Energy Market Jobs
Technical recruiter Matt Dalton helps candidates secure work in the energy market by focusing on the details. From job requisitions to maximizing candidates’ time efficiently, he has plenty of tips for anyone who’s thinking about working with a recruiter. Although he spends his days interviewing candidates, this time it was our turn to interview him. Read more here.
Question: What’s it like to be a technical recruiter in the energy market, and what are the benefits you bring to candidates?
Matt: Recruiting presents a chance to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives and aid them in providing for their families. Nonetheless, given the large number of recruiters in the field, distinguishing ourselves is crucial. At FootBridge, we prioritize fostering a close-knit team atmosphere and adopting a positive attitude toward every candidate to set ourselves apart.
Although not every interaction will result in a successful placement, candidate conversations are extremely beneficial because it puts the individual in our database, and we’re always working hard for them. From engineers to project managers, field technicians, and more, we get to work with some of the very best in the industry.
Question: What processes and people set FootBridge apart from other energy staffing firms?
Matt: Having previously worked in sales for a Fortune 500 company, my work was heavily influenced by the bottom line. While wins were always welcomed and valued, at FootBridge, we prioritize something even more meaningful—a genuine connection with every member of our team, from our own staff to those seeking employment in an in-demand industry. This desire for a closer-knit and rewarding environment that prioritizes people over profits led me to seek out a smaller yet established company where we continuously have repeat candidates, many of whom have become friends. We also recognize the importance of respecting people’s timelines while enjoying the process.
Question: Could you share some of the highlights of your recruiting journey?
Matt: During a conversation with an individual considering a job opportunity from a different recruiter, it became clear that the staffing agency they were dealing with could only provide insurance three months into the position. This posed a major issue for the individual as they needed coverage sooner. However, since we were able to offer benefits after just one month of employment, it gave us an advantage during the negotiation process.
Another success story involves a woman who had recently relocated with her family from Houston to Baltimore and was in search of an assistant project manager role. Through our assistance, we were able to connect her with a highly regarded company, which brought a sense of clarity to her job search in an unfamiliar city.
Question: What are the essential characteristics that distinguish a candidate as exceptional and noteworthy?
Matt: I look for candidates who are well-spoken, ask good questions, show interest, and can speak thoughtfully to the experience listed on their resumes.
Question: Do you have any advice for individuals who are searching for employment opportunities within the energy sector?
Matt: One of the most crucial tips for job seekers is to have reliable references, as they can speak volumes about their character. To ensure the references carry weight, it’s advisable to reach out to a close connection from their previous employer who can vouch for them. Additionally, it’s important always to leave a positive impression and avoid burning bridges by excelling in any job opportunity.
Question: What makes the FootBridge Company a unique place to work?
Matt: We definitely go the extra mile for our candidates and want to “disqualify” someone for a position right away because if it’s not the right fit, there’s something else out there for them, and we will certainly keep them on our radar for future opportunities.
Question: What do you enjoy most about recruiting in the energy market?
Matt: I want to provide as much value as I can to job seekers. Even though they may have already spoken to dozens of recruiters, they chose to work with me. It’s a real indication of the positivity we bring to a recruiting relationship.
