I&C Designer – Nuclear
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Designer to support engineering and design activities for nuclear power generation facilities. This position will develop and modify I&C drawings and documentation associated with plant modifications, equipment upgrades, maintenance projects, and capital improvements.
The ideal candidate will have strong I&C design experience, advanced CAD capabilities, and the ability to independently develop designs from engineering input, field conditions, specifications, vendor information, and applicable standards. Senior candidates may also provide technical direction, review design work, and support planning and execution of complex design assignments.
Responsibilities
- Develop detailed I&C designs, layouts, drawings, and modifications for nuclear power plant systems and equipment.
- Prepare and revise drawings including:
- Instrumentation and control schematics
- Logic and functional diagrams
- Loop diagrams
- Wiring and interconnection diagrams
- Instrument location and installation details
- Control panel and cabinet layouts
- Cable and termination drawings
- Instrument indexes and I/O documentation
- Perform design work using engineering calculations, equipment specifications, vendor drawings, design criteria, field information, and existing plant documentation.
- Independently evaluate and adapt established design methods, procedures, and criteria to meet project requirements.
- Apply advanced CAD techniques and design applications to develop accurate and constructible design packages.
- Support development of plant modification and design change packages, including drawing revisions, affected-document identification, equipment interfaces, and configuration changes.
- Perform field walkdowns to verify existing instrumentation, control panels, cable routing, equipment interfaces, termination points, and constructability.
- Review plant drawings and documentation to identify interfaces and potential impacts to existing I&C systems.
- Coordinate with I&C Engineering, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil/Structural, Operations, Maintenance, Construction, and other disciplines.
- Evaluate vendor drawings and technical information for incorporation into plant designs.
- Develop or modify instrument installation details, cable routing, terminations, junction boxes, panels, and control system interfaces.
- Identify design conflicts, discrepancies, and constructability concerns and coordinate resolutions with engineering.
- Maintain configuration control and ensure design documentation accurately reflects approved plant modifications.
- Perform checking and review of drawings for technical accuracy, completeness, constructability, and compliance with applicable standards.
- Support resolution of RFIs, field questions, design issues, and construction discrepancies.
- Assist with drawing lists, design estimates, schedules, resource requirements, and execution planning.
- Provide technical guidance to junior designers and drafters as needed.
- Senior-level candidates may oversee the progress and quality of design work performed by other designers.
- Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, project meetings, and interdisciplinary coordination meetings.
These responsibilities follow the Level IV–VII progression in the provided framework, from independently performing layout and design work through advanced CAD application, technical direction, drawing-quality responsibility, design criteria development, resource estimating, and planning/scheduling of design work.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of I&C drafting/design experience; 10+ years preferred for senior-level consideration.
- Nuclear power generation experience strongly preferred.
- High school diploma, technical school, or Associate Degree in Drafting, Design Technology, Instrumentation, Electrical Technology, or related field; Bachelor’s Degree is a plus.
- Advanced proficiency with 2D and/or 3D CAD applications.
- Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar design software.
- Strong understanding of instrumentation, controls, electrical interfaces, and industrial control systems.
- Experience developing drawings from engineering specifications, vendor information, sketches, design criteria, and field conditions.
- Ability to interpret P&IDs, logic diagrams, loop diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment drawings, and engineering specifications.
- Working knowledge of transmitters, switches, control valves, actuators, sensors, junction boxes, control panels, PLC/DCS interfaces, and associated instrumentation.
- Experience performing field walkdowns and incorporating field conditions into design documents.
- Understanding of drawing control, revision control, configuration management, and design-document quality.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple design assignments.
- Strong communication skills with engineering, construction, operations, maintenance, contractors, and project management.
The following are nuclear/I&C-specific additions beyond the source matrix and would be relevant preferences for this type of position:
- Nuclear plant modification/design change packages
- Safety-related and non-safety-related I&C systems
- Analog and digital control system modifications
- PLC, DCS, and digital control system interfaces
- Instrument loops, signal routing, and termination design
- Control room and control panel modifications
- Equipment replacement and instrumentation upgrades
- Nuclear configuration management and design-basis documentation
- Separation and independence requirements for safety-related circuits
- Nuclear outage and online modification projects
- Design verification and independent checking
- Construction support, testing support, and as-built documentation
Knowledge of applicable IEEE standards, ISA practices, NRC requirements, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B quality assurance principles, and site-specific nuclear procedures is preferred depending on project scope.
