Electrical Designer – Nuclear
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Designer to support engineering and design activities for nuclear power generation facilities. This position will develop and modify electrical drawings and documentation associated with plant modifications, equipment upgrades, maintenance projects, and capital improvements.
The ideal candidate will have strong electrical design experience, advanced CAD capabilities, and the ability to independently develop designs from engineering input, field conditions, equipment data, specifications, and applicable standards. Senior candidates may also provide technical direction, review design work, and support planning and execution of complex design assignments.
Responsibilities
- Develop detailed electrical designs, layouts, drawings, and modifications for nuclear power plant systems and equipment.
- Prepare and revise drawings including:
- Single line diagrams
- Schematics and elementary diagrams
- Wiring and connection diagrams
- Cable and conduit schedules
- Raceway and cable tray layouts
- Equipment and panel layouts
- Grounding drawings
- Perform design work using engineering calculations, equipment specifications, vendor drawings, design criteria, field information, and existing plant documentation.
- Independently evaluate and adapt established design methods, procedures, and criteria to meet project requirements.
- Apply advanced CAD techniques and electrical design applications to develop accurate, constructible design packages.
- Support development of plant modification and design change packages, including drawing revisions, affected-document identification, and equipment interfaces.
- Perform field walkdowns to verify existing conditions, equipment locations, routing, interferences, constructability, and drawing accuracy.
- Review plant drawings and documentation to identify design interfaces and impacts to existing electrical systems.
- Coordinate with Electrical Engineering, I&C, Mechanical, Civil/Structural, Operations, Maintenance, Construction, and other disciplines.
- Evaluate vendor drawings and technical information for incorporation into plant designs.
- Identify design conflicts and constructability concerns and work with engineering to develop resolutions.
- Maintain configuration control and ensure drawings accurately reflect approved plant modifications.
- Perform checking and review of drawings for technical accuracy, completeness, constructability, and compliance with applicable standards.
- Support resolution of RFIs, field questions, design issues, and construction discrepancies.
- Assist with drawing lists, design estimates, schedules, resource requirements, and execution planning.
- Provide technical guidance to junior designers and drafters as needed.
- Senior-level candidates may oversee the progress and quality of design work performed by other designers.
- Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, project meetings, and interdisciplinary coordination meetings.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of electrical drafting/design experience; 10+ years preferred for senior-level consideration.
- Nuclear power generation experience strongly preferred.
- High school diploma, technical school, or Associate Degree in Drafting, Design Technology, Electrical Technology, or related field; Bachelor’s Degree is a plus.
- Advanced proficiency with 2D and/or 3D CAD applications.
- Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar design software.
- Strong understanding of electrical design principles within industrial or power generation environments.
- Experience developing drawings from specifications, vendor information, sketches, engineering input, and field conditions.
- Working knowledge of switchgear, MCCs, transformers, motors, panels, breakers, raceway systems, cables, grounding systems, and electrical distribution equipment.
- Ability to interpret one-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, equipment drawings, and engineering specifications.
- Experience performing field walkdowns and incorporating field conditions into design documents.
- Understanding of drawing control, revision control, configuration management, and design-document quality.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple design assignments.
- Strong communication skills with engineering, construction, operations, maintenance, contractors, and project management.
Experience in the following areas is beneficial:
- Nuclear plant modification/design change packages
- Safety-related and non-safety-related electrical systems
- Configuration management and design-basis documentation
- AC and DC electrical distribution systems
- Cable tray, conduit, raceway, and cable routing
- Equipment replacement and upgrade projects
- Electrical separation and penetration requirements
- Nuclear outage and online modification projects
- Design verification and independent checking
- Construction support and as-built documentation
Knowledge of NEC/NFPA 70, IEEE standards, NRC requirements, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B principles, and site-specific nuclear procedures is preferred depending on project scope.
