What Hiring Managers Need to Know About Today’s Engineering and Energy Workforce - A Conversation with Recruiting Manager Steve Cochrane.

What Hiring Managers Need to Know About Today’s Engineering and Energy Workforce – A Conversation with Recruiting Manager Steve Cochrane

I’ve spent years recruiting professionals for engineering, energy, manufacturing, and industrial projects, and one thing I can say about today’s hiring market is that good candidates have options.

There is a lot of work happening across the industries we support at The FootBridge Company. That’s great for candidates, but it can make things difficult for hiring managers trying to build their engineering and energy teams. Companies that move too slowly or get too focused on finding a candidate who checks every single box can miss out on some very good people.

As a Recruiting Manager at FootBridge, I talk with candidates and hiring managers every day. Here are seven things I think employers should keep in mind when they’re trying to hire for engineering and energy projects in today’s market.

1. Speed matters more than ever

One of the biggest mistakes I see companies make is simply taking too long to interview. If one company isn’t moving quickly enough, there’s a good chance another one will. We see it happen all the time. We find a candidate who is qualified and interested in a position, but if it takes weeks to schedule an interview or get feedback, that person probably isn’t sitting around waiting. They’re talking with other companies, interviewing for other projects, and potentially receiving offers.

That doesn’t mean companies should rush into hiring someone who isn’t right for the job. But if you see a resume you like, schedule the interview. If you have a good interview, provide feedback and keep things moving. The longer you wait, the greater the chance that the candidate will be off the market.

2. Look beyond the exact job description

Another thing I encourage hiring managers to do is be flexible when it comes to experience. Sometimes we’ll speak with a candidate who doesn’t have the exact background listed in the job description, yet they have a lot of transferable experience that could make them successful in the role. Maybe they’ve worked in a different industry but have similar project experience. Maybe their previous title was different, but the work itself was very close to what the hiring manager needs.

That’s where it helps to look beyond titles and focus on what the person has actually done. Technical knowledge, project experience, safety awareness, leadership ability, and experience working in complex industrial environments can all transfer from one setting to another. If you’re too rigid about finding the “perfect” resume, you can end up passing on someone who could be a great addition to the project.

3. Communication builds trust with candidates

Communication is probably one of the biggest things candidates value when working with a recruiter. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve spoken with who say they submitted a resume through another recruiter and then never heard from that person again. No feedback. No update. Nothing.

We try hard not to operate that way.

When I receive feedback from a hiring manager, I want the candidate to know. If they have an interview coming up, we’re going to help them prepare. If the hiring process is taking longer than expected, I’d rather tell them that than leave them wondering what happened.

We’re also checking in to find out what else they have going on. Are they interviewing somewhere else? Has anything changed with their current job? Are they getting close to another offer?

When communication is consistent on both sides, the entire hiring process becomes easier. It also gives our clients a much better understanding of where a candidate stands throughout the hiring process.

4. Data centers are creating new workforce demand

One area I’m especially interested in right now is data centers. They’re being built all over the country, and those facilities need a huge range of people to design, build, commission, operate, and support them. But it goes beyond the data center itself. All of that infrastructure needs power, creating additional opportunities across the energy and power markets.

We’re seeing demand that touches engineering, construction, electrical infrastructure, power generation, utilities, commissioning, operations, and other supporting disciplines. From a recruiting perspective, it’s exciting because these projects are creating opportunities for candidates from a wide range of backgrounds. It also means companies may increasingly compete for the same experienced people.

5. Difficult Positions Require a Hands-On Search

When a client comes to us with a position they’ve been struggling to fill, we first want to understand why it’s been difficult. Maybe the skill set is very specific, there aren’t many qualified candidates in the area, or the people with that experience are already working. From there, we’ll start with the local market and then expand the search if we need to

Other times, it takes a much deeper search. That means spending hours going through our internal database, LinkedIn, Indeed, professional networks, referrals, and other resources to find people who could realistically fit the position.

The goal is to:

  • Talk with people
  • Understand what they’ve actually done
  • Find out what they’re looking for
  • Determine whether the opportunity makes sense for both sides

Doing so becomes especially important with specialized positions because the right person isn’t always actively applying for jobs. Sometimes you have to find them.

6. Culture and compensation matter

The things candidates care about have changed over the years, but right now I’d put company culture and compensation near the top of the list. There are too many opportunities out there for companies to ignore either one. If someone feels like they aren’t being paid fairly or they’re working in an environment they don’t enjoy, they’re probably going to be more willing to listen when another opportunity comes along.

And today, there are plenty of projects for them to consider. Companies may spend a lot of time thinking about how to attract good people, but retaining the ones they already have is just as important. You can’t wait until somebody gives notice to start thinking about whether they’re happy. Employers need to stay aware of compensation, management, project culture, communication, and whether employees feel valued for their work.

7. A strong hiring process can be a competitive advantage

If there’s one thing I’d want hiring managers to take away from all of this, it’s that good candidates rarely stay available for long. When we send over someone you’re interested in, move quickly. Get the interview on the calendar. Give us feedback. And if the person doesn’t have the exact background you originally pictured, take a closer look at whether their experience could transfer.

Recruiting works best when there is good communication between everyone involved — the recruiter, the candidate, and the hiring manager. Looking ahead, I don’t see a shortage of work across the industries FootBridge supports. Across energy, manufacturing, industrial facilities, data centers, renewables, civil construction, and commercial projects, there are some massive projects underway and more on the way.

That’s probably what excites me most about the next few years. There will be many projects that need talented people to get across the finish line. Our job is to find those people, understand what they’re looking for, and connect them with the companies that need their experience.

After more than 25 years in specialized staffing, that’s still what FootBridge is about. Contact us today to learn more.

Meet Emily Ingersoll, Chief Financial Officer

Meet Emily Ingersoll, Chief Financial Officer

Being the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of a staffing firm like FootBridge demands a keen focus on financial acumen, strategic foresight, and a deep understanding of the staffing industry’s intricacies. For these reasons, we depend heavily on Emily Ingersoll’s financial wisdom to help us remain competitive. From finance to accounting, bookkeeping, and compliance, continue reading to learn how much we appreciate her efforts and why her insights help shape our future goals as an ever-evolving staffing firm.

Question: Our discussion couldn’t come at a better time, with November 2024 marking your sixth anniversary as the Chief Financial Officer at FootBridge. How does it feel to have reached this significant milestone?

Emily: I vividly remember starting my adventure with FootBridge on Veterans Day in 2018 as it was a big shift from a previous role in public accounting to a private accounting position.  However, it wasn’t long before I felt like I’d discovered a rare gem with our unique staffing firm. As for immediate goals as Chief Financial Officer, from the beginning, my objectives were well-defined as I aimed to learn the intricacies of managing a staffing business from a financial perspective while also viewing it as a powerful means to drive revenue, maintain organization, and create meaningful change.

FootBridge caught my attention because our CEO, Todd Springer, was eager to strengthen the leadership team to spur company expansion. I also sought a workplace that felt welcoming yet offered the opportunity for my daily contributions to have a tangible impact, and FootBridge has exceeded my goals in that aspect.

Question: Businesses seek partnerships with reputable and financially sound staffing agencies. Could you shed light on how you work hard to foster and sustain client relationships while adeptly handling contractual agreements?

Emily: Absolutely. Partnering with esteemed organizations is a top priority for us, so I actively engage with our client’s financial teams to conduct credit checks, oversee purchase orders, and facilitate transparent communication about terms and billing procedures. Although our account executives handle client relationships, it’s important to highlight that many clients make use of visible portals. Therefore, we tailor our approaches to meet their specific requirements, showcasing a degree of adaptability that sets us apart from other staffing agencies. Additionally, our flexibility with project-based invoicing is a considerable benefit.

Question: What processes do you implement to ensure transparency and alignment between finance and other departments within our staffing firm?

Emily: We keep everyone on the team in the loop by sharing weekly updates on company performance. If there’s an opportunity for improvement, we encourage feedback from our internal team, clients, and contractors alike. Our clients particularly value our open communication, especially regarding contractor management. For payroll, we rely on ADP, and we offer benefits through major providers. This system enables employees to easily log in and check their sick leave and paid hours without any hassle.

Additionally, both clients and employees have access to Bullhorn, which provides real-time employment updates every week. We also handle payroll and billing on a weekly basis, ensuring that time cards are always accessible to everyone involved. Then there are our recruiting tools, such as LinkedIn and Indeed, which are among the best in the market. Not to mention, our passion, combined with working smart, allows us to customize our staffing approach.

Question: Taxes, labor laws, and other regulatory requirements vary by state and add tremendous complexity to the payroll process. How does FootBridge ensure contractor compliance?

Emily: Our robust compliance with legal standards is a significant asset, and we, therefore, operate conservatively to ensure complete adherence to legal requirements and to minimize risks. We also meticulously follow the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), hire top advisors, and maintain a robust payroll system.  While many staffing firms struggle with employee coding, we are diligent in our job classifications. We also take pride in educating our clients about overtime requirements and staying updated on state laws.

Question: FootBridge is known for our close-knit community, which adds personalization to our relationships and helps eliminate technical errors. What else do you feel sets us apart from other staffing firms?

Emily:  The industries we serve, such as oil and gas, are very niche staffing sectors, which allows us to develop very close relationships with our candidates and clients. To that extent, we have weekly in-person meetings to understand the ‘why’ behind every task and strategize on how we can propel FootBridge to the next level. If something is being asked of someone, but they don’t know why it needs to be done, we need to clarify that because it is crucial to understand how one’s work contributes to the overall goal.  Then there’s analytics, which we heavily embrace because doing so can provide better forecasting, help set realistic expectations, and challenge goals.

Question: Despite our modest size, FootBridge is uniquely dedicated to growth. Consequently, it’s not just about increasing the bottom line but about growing people and the business sustainably. Tell us about this.

Emily: Over the past two years, we have been in a significant growth phase because we’ve reinvested in our internal infrastructure and tools, focusing on organic growth rather than mergers and acquisitions. We’ve also worked especially hard to hire the right team, relying on our core values to guide us because, with the right team in place, we are better prepared to meet new hiring demands. To achieve sustainable growth, it’s essential to nurture and retain our team. Rapid expansion within a year only to stumble afterward is not our goal; therefore, we adopt a thoughtful and strategic approach. We focus on our people’s skill sets, growing clients, and honing good business skills rather than merely chasing revenue. Diversity is also a priority. We ensure we learn from our peer group and recruit from diverse backgrounds. I oversee all support staff, and we take the same cohesive approach across the board.

Meet Chris Mayfield, Senior Recruiter

Meet Chris Mayfield, Senior Recruiter

When energy companies embark on large capital projects such as refineries, power plants, or boiler installations, they need a staffing partner that can deliver the right talent at the right time. That’s where FootBridge and its standout senior recruiter, Chris Mayfield, shine. No matter the circumstance, he prioritizes matching top-tier contract workers with short and long-term positions where they can thrive, and we can’t help but feel that Chris exemplifies FootBridge’s mission of delivering specialized staffing solutions that fulfill the unique demands of the oil, gas & chemicals, and renewable energy sectors.

Continue reading to learn more about Chris’s recruitment strategy and why clients choose FootBridge for all their staffing needs.

Building Success as a Senior Recruiter: How Every Strategic Hire Drives Long-Term Project Excellence

When companies evaluate staffing firms specializing in oil, gas, chemicals, and renewable energy, they seek insight into our meticulous recruitment processes and the qualities that differentiate us from general staffing agencies. Chris highlights that sourcing contract workers as a senior recruiter requires a multifaceted approach. From a robust database built on over 20 years of industry expertise to proactive outreach and trusted referrals, his dedication to creating genuine, meaningful connections is his top priority.

It’s why he doesn’t just make calls to see who matches a job description and then disappear unless another opportunity comes up because “People rely on us to stay connected; otherwise, we might as well be strangers, and they have no reason to trust our outreach,” he says. Instead, Chris consistently follows up to inform them whether he’s heard anything about a job opening, as it’s far better than leaving someone in uncertainty. At other times, he addresses payroll questions or ensures that contract worker submits their time sheets promptly. Ultimately, he finds that career discussions are profoundly personal, and the individuals he speaks with become friends. “It’s just another reason why we’re a preferred partner for oil, gas, & chemical companies managing the intricacies of staffing large-scale projects because we prioritize the well-being of our team members.”

A Trusted Staffing Partner

Chris also iterates that although he’s spent more than 10 years in the power plant and energy services sector, he continues to learn something new every day as a senior recruiter at FootBridge. One day, he may be getting to understand how the pharmaceutical industry operates or the intricacies of food processing plants. Other times, Chris may speak with a hiring manager who is seeking to build a qualified team for constructing energy plants or maintaining refineries. No day is the same, and he thrives on the energy that comes with recruiting and making a significant impact in someone’s life.

He adds, “One of the key reasons we’re a trusted staffing partner in the industry is our ability to align the right talent with the right opportunities. My role is to go beyond understanding the technical requirements of a position.  I also focus on the culture and long-term objectives of both the client and the candidate to ensure a perfect match.” Chris also highlights that his project list involves complex timelines, specific technical requirements, and significant capital budgets, so he confidently asks insightful questions of our business development managers and candidates alike. “I want to know if a candidate has worked on a similar project, if they can see themselves traveling to another region, and if the project timeline works for them and their families.”

Understanding the person rather than just assessing skills is a highly valued trait that job seekers appreciate. Knowing what a project is “really about” is essential because it reduces turnover, builds stronger project teams, and fosters career satisfaction and growth. Chris cites an instance when a significant capital project was delayed and over budget as an example of transparency. “It’s a vital disclosure for potential candidates so they can make well-informed career choices. Not to mention, transparency builds trust, and trust leads to long-term relationships.”

Ultimately, whether an energy firm needs an entire team for a capital project or a specialized technician for a short-term role, “Our clients rely on us because they know we deliver results, and our candidates trust us because we’re invested in their success,” he says.

The FootBridge Difference

At FootBridge, we understand that successful projects require well-vetted contract workers supported by a team that genuinely cares, and with recruiters like Chris leading the way, we’re committed to delivering personalized staffing solutions that drive project success and foster lasting relationships. “The biggest difference is our internal team in that everyone is working toward the same goal,” says Chris. “If something doesn’t work, we ask ourselves what the solution is. Let’s figure it out.” Whether you need a specialized technician or an entire project team, FootBridge is here to ensure your goals are met with precision and dedication. Let’s build success together—contact us today to find your next great hire.

Meet Patty Osmecki, Administrative Assistant

Meet Patty Osmecki, Administrative Assistant

Since joining FootBridge in October 2018, Patty Osmecki has been a cornerstone of the team at our niche staffing firm, seamlessly managing administrative tasks and ensuring operational efficiency. With her rich background in retail management and years of customer-facing experience, Patty transitioned into the staffing industry with ease, bringing a unique perspective and an unwavering commitment to excellence. Keep reading to discover how Patty’s role as an administrative assistant at FootBridge is essential in delivering exceptional staffing firm support and ensuring satisfaction for every candidate.

Consistency Through Communication

When speaking with Patty, one of the first things that she talks about is the power of communication and teamwork to accomplish her daily responsibilities. Whether it’s processing onboarding packets for contract and perm employees, tracking ID compliance, or assisting with resume formatting, she emphasizes clear, cross-departmental communication to keep workflows smooth. “We check and double-check everything,” Patty explains. “It’s about ensuring everyone is on the same page to deliver what’s needed on time.”

Her collaborative approach shines through in her dealings with colleagues across various departments too. By fostering open communication and maintaining detailed records, she helps align the goals of the administrative team with the mission of our staffing firm, ensuring that the requirements of both clients and candidates are seamlessly met.

Adapting to the Unexpected

Not surprisingly, no two days are alike for Patty, and she thrives in the dynamic environment of a staffing firm. With a set list of weekly tasks, she quickly reprioritizes when urgent requests arise, ensuring deadlines are met without compromising quality. We find this adaptability has been critical in her success, especially during high-pressure periods.

For instance, during a colleague’s extended leave, Patty stepped up without hesitation, managing additional responsibilities and maintaining team cohesion. “That’s what we do here,” she says, highlighting FootBridge’s strong culture of support and collaboration.

The Role of Administrative Support in Staffing

Every role at FootBridge is vital to the success of our client and candidate relationships and administrative positions, like Patty’s, are often the glue that holds everything together. Whether she’s preparing onboarding paperwork, ensuring compliance for a new hire, or assisting with payroll processes, Patty plays a pivotal role in shaping the overall client and candidate experience.

“When onboarding doesn’t happen smoothly, it creates delays for everyone,” Patty notes. “Clients are depending on us to provide qualified candidates who can hit the ground running, and candidates expect a seamless process as they start their new roles.” This dual responsibility means every detail matters—from accurate documentation to meeting tight deadlines.

Although tasks like onboarding and compliance may not be as visible as recruiting, they are just as essential to ensuring that contract and perm employees can start work on time, and that we are meeting client demands while providing candidates with confidence in their new roles.

Building Trust Through Dedication

What Patty values most about her role as an administrative assistant is the trust and autonomy granted to her by her leaders. “Diane [her supervisor] gives me projects and trusts me to get them done. That confidence makes all the difference,” she shares.

This trust has also allowed Patty to grow in her position, taking on new challenges like managing compliance for legal contracts and expanding her skills in HR-related tasks. Plus her proactive attitude and desire to learn reflect her commitment to both personal and professional growth, which is crucial when supporting a staffing firm’s operations for contract and perm employees.

Additionally, Patty highlights how her work directly impacts the broader success of FootBridge’s clients and candidates. “Every piece of paperwork I process and every email I send contributes to the bigger picture,” she explains. “It ensures that our clients feel supported and that our candidates have a positive experience from the moment they join us.”

The FootBridge Difference

Patty attributes much of her success to FootBridge’s strong leadership and supportive culture. From her direct supervisors to the broader company ethos, she feels motivated to go above and beyond for both clients and candidates. “We’re all in it together,” Patty says, “and that’s what makes us effective.”

At FootBridge, every team member—whether they’re in recruitment, business development, or administrative support—works toward the shared goal of exceeding expectations and Patty’s role as an administrative assistant underscores the importance of operational efficiency in fulfilling the firm’s mission. “It’s a team effort,” she says. “Every department relies on each other to deliver results.”

Making a Lasting Impact as an Administrative Assistant

When asked about her favorite part of the job, Patty points to the sense of accomplishment that comes with a well-executed project. “I like the feeling of completing a task and knowing it contributes to the team’s success,” she says. “It’s not just about checking boxes—it’s about creating a system that supports everyone involved.”

Her willingness to go the extra mile—whether by taking on additional responsibilities during a busy season or stepping in to cover for a colleague—reflects her dedication to the firm’s core values.

Ultimately, Patty’s story is a testament to the FootBridge Company values: collaboration, communication, and commitment. Plus, her dedication ensures that every detail, no matter how small, is handled with precision and care. As a result of her efforts she ensures our entire team can consistently deliver exceptional service to clients and candidates, whether they’re hiring for critical projects or seeking career opportunities in contract or permanent roles.

Through her hard work and focus on the bigger picture, Patty has become an indispensable part of the FootBridge team, proving that every role matters in creating a successful staffing experience. As she continues to grow in her position, she exemplifies the impact that dedication and teamwork can have in a fast-paced and ever-evolving industry.

Meet Di Longtin, Office Manager & HR Administrator

Meet Di Longtin, Office Manager & HR Administrator

After 24 years, Office Manager and HR administrator Di Longtin continues to excel as she effortlessly navigates the constant whirlwind of staffing challenges. Since 2000, she and her ever-growing team have played a pivotal role in almost every aspect of our operations. Whether she’s overseeing onboarding procedures or managing client-specific paperwork, background checks, and drug tests, her workdays are anything but monotonous. Despite the challenges, Di remains steadfast in her dedication and stands out as one of the most cheerful people we know. Keep reading to discover her crucial role in ensuring FootBridge’s hiring process operates seamlessly and efficiently.

Question: You’ve just marked an impressive 24 years with FootBridge. What parts of your work as Office Manager & HR Administrator fill you with the most pride?

Countless experiences fill me with pride, but streamlining workflows for improved efficiency stands out above the rest. While my main focus is working with candidates and our internal team to systemize processes for maximum efficiency, I sometimes conduct screening protocols for new clients, which can include compliance reviews and assessments of workplace culture and environment – so these critical improvements have a ripple effect across the company be it measured in time, positive candidate/client feedback, or cost savings.  Moreover, I am incredibly proud of our administrative team’s efforts as they readily respond to pressing issues like reformatting resumes so they jump to the top of a client’s pile, conducting background checks, and staying on top of drug testing requirements.

We carry a hefty weight yet flourish in the dynamic environment of a staffing firm, so being deeply involved in the company’s core activities, even after all these years, brings me immense satisfaction.

Question: In what ways do you think FootBridge stands out from other specialized staffing agencies?

Our principles set us apart from typical staffing agencies that focus solely on closing deals, securing clients in need of personnel, and making matches without concern for the outcome. We also prioritize establishing solid and lasting partnerships right from the start and go well beyond that initial connection. Then there are our recruiters who consistently engage with candidates, fostering a welcoming atmosphere by addressing their questions, particularly on their critical first day of contract work.

We also ensure that candidates feel at ease submitting the onboarding documents and managing the often daunting task of understanding insurance benefits, especially when switching jobs. For instance, I walk them through the entire process, clarifying the different plans available and highlighting the ones that would be most advantageous for their specific needs. Over the years, I’ve lost count of the number of grateful “thank you’s” I’ve received for this assistance.

Question: With each day bringing new staffing challenges, how do you maintain your steady focus?

Tackling a diverse array of topics each day might seem daunting, but the hands-on nature of my work brings me immense satisfaction. For example, I thrive on being pulled in various directions; it keeps my days vibrant and stimulating. Amid the hustle, I cherish personal communication and prefer crafting personalized emails over automated messages, as they reflect my true thoughts and words. Although this approach may be more challenging, it is undeniably the most heartfelt. Additionally, I make a concerted effort to stay abreast of new HR laws and regulations and continuously seek out innovative practices. This commitment ensures that I remain an indispensable part of FootBridge, a role I hold dear.

Question: Your 25th anniversary is just around the corner. What excites you most about your journey with FootBridge?

After all this time, I still look forward to working here every day. I love this career path not only because I know this work so well but also because I genuinely believe in the company’s ethics and the people who work here. We do good things, getting people jobs that work well in all aspects—it’s a feel-good feeling when people say thank you for everything we do.

Meet Cara Chatellier, Marketing Manager

Meet Cara Chatellier, Marketing Manager

Since 2019, The FootBridge Company’s marketing manager, Cara Chatellier, has played a pivotal role in cementing our status as a premier staffing firm within a highly competitive market. She champions our fundamental principles of accountability, transparency, integrity, and excellence, all while making sure that our external image aligns seamlessly with our internal operations. Not to mention, her extensive expertise in both recruiting and marketing grants her a distinctive perspective on staffing, which has significantly enhanced the accessibility of our services to both clients and candidates. Continue reading to delve into her perspectives on all things FootBridge!

Question: Since its inception in 2001, FootBridge has excelled in delivering premier staffing solutions for both direct hire and contract positions across diverse sectors such as energy services, oil and gas, manufacturing, power and utilities, process industries, and construction management. What has been the driving force behind our sustained success over the years?

Many staffing agencies boast a broad spectrum of services without having a true specialization, FootBridge stands out by focusing on its areas of expertise. The workplace environment cultivates a strong sense of belonging among our employees. Whether we’re in the office ordering lunch together or out and about doing a team-building activity, this dedication creates a positive culture in all areas of business and is reflective of our clientele.

CEO Todd Springer, who has a background in nuclear project engineering, leads by bringing on enthusiastic team members who are passionate about the work they do. Similarly, we seek clients who recognize the unique value we bring to their projects, desiring not merely a staffing agency to manage their placements but a genuine, collaborative partnership.

Question: How does FootBridge further differentiate itself from other staffing agencies?

Some staffing agencies are seen as temporary solutions focused on short-term placements or behemoths that concentrate on profits. However, FootBridge stands out by putting considerable thought and effort into cultivating long-term relationships between candidates and clients. Our team members are also highly communicative, so even if they don’t have a job for a candidate, they prioritize feedback and offer valuable resources, including resume tips, interview coaching, and networking opportunities.

Each team member is deeply immersed in their industry—whether it’s clean energy, manufacturing, oil and gas, chemicals, industrial facilities, or civil and commercial projects. Therefore, clients and candidates interact with professionals who have extensive expertise in their given market. We’re also small for a reason, and hiring managers across the industries we serve appreciate the close collaboration our recruiters and business development managers afford them.

While our sales and recruiting teams are adept at identifying the perfect candidate from our database, their responsibilities extend beyond just placement. They ensure candidates are well-treated, promptly compensated, and clearly informed about job expectations. Clients can feel confident the quality of work will not only meet but surpass their expectations.

Question: For over two decades, FootBridge has gathered a treasure trove of stories from clients and candidates alike. Which of these narratives do you believe leaves the most profound impression?

The stories are rich and varied, and many often require specialized expertise, particularly for complex capital projects that demand unique skills. So, it’s probably those large-scale projects that necessitate swift and efficient staffing for roles like Project Control (PC) Managers, which can be pivotal in ensuring a project meets its deadline. We’ve also had countless instances where securing the right professional has dramatically influenced project sustainability and led to significant savings.

As an example, veteran recruiter Heather Parham, alongside client business managers Sarah Guarino and Luke Somers, share insights from their ongoing efforts to cultivate relationships with prospective employees. We love how their dedication guarantees a consistent flow of talent, effectively addressing our clients’ demands.

Question: As our marketing manager, we find your narrative just as compelling as ours. Having previously served as a senior sales recruiter for a Perm Sales Placement agency before moving into corporate relations and marketing, how have these diverse experiences shaped your effectiveness as a marketing leader?

My career initially took root in sales before I shifted to a position within a staffing firm that specialized in permanent placements. Reflecting on this transition, diving deep into the staffing sector has provided me with crucial insights into deal structuring, relationship management, and the inner dynamics of such organizations. My background in sales has been equally important, particularly from a marketing perspective, as it has honed my ability to craft compelling content, deliver messages with precision, and utilize visuals and narratives to sell ideas. This blend of experiences uniquely positions me to communicate effectively with both candidates and clients in the staffing industry, ensuring that our messages strike a chord.

Question: What are some of the highlights of your experiences working with FootBridge?

The most gratifying aspect of this work is the relationships I’ve built with the entire FootBridge team and celebrating their achievements. When a campaign successfully attracts the right talent to our team, assists a candidate in securing a job, or enables a client to accomplish their goals, it is truly the most fulfilling experience.

Question: What contributes to the exceptional collaboration within the FootBridge team?

Success hinges on accountability, effective communication, and unwavering consistency. While it’s tempting to launch ambitious initiatives or brainstorm countless ideas without following through, our team inherently holds each other responsible and ensures that our strategies and plans are not just theoretical but actionable. By prioritizing tasks that promise the most significant impact, we ensure that the most crucial objectives are achieved first.

We’re also keen on improving processes and ensuring everyone’s feedback is heard. Since we have the flexibility to work remotely, we allocate time for in-person meetings, hold continuous virtual check-ins, and regularly engage in team-building activities.  I find these initiatives an excellent opportunity to step away from our daily routines and truly connect with our colleagues, which significantly enhances camaraderie and teamwork.

Meet Dee Sullivan, billing and accounts receivable coordinator

Meet Dee Sullivan, Billing and Accounts Receivable Coordinator

Since March 2022, Dariane “Dee” Sullivan has been the cornerstone of FootBridge Staffing’s efficiency as the billing and accounts receivable coordinator. Her meticulous nature ensures every detail is attended to, while her keen awareness of client relationships highlights her belief in the power of positivity as a universal key to success. Continue reading to learn more about her work experience and why checking things off her to-list makes her day.

Question: What inspired your interest in accounts receivables, and how does your experience with a staffing firm contrast with your previous roles?

In 2014, I worked as a billing specialist for a plumbing company. At the outset, I was the sole individual handling billing, and by the time I departed five years later to explore different opportunities, I had implemented various policies and procedures that significantly improved the company’s operations. That role, much like staffing, involved navigating a unique set of billing guidelines, and I recall it fondly as a pivotal chapter in my professional journey, mainly because the company was reminiscent of FootBridge—a small, team-oriented business.

Subsequently, in 2019, I joined a large staffing firm in a corporate environment. While the experience was enjoyable, I quickly realized that my true calling was within a specialized agency like FootBridge, where my contributions could genuinely make a difference. Decisions are made with everyone’s best interests in mind here, and I really feel like my voice is heard. Although this career wasn’t something I pursued intentionally, my innate talent for numbers has led me down this rewarding and natural path. Fortunately, I believe I am exactly where I should be.

Question: As a billing and accounts receivable coordinator, how do you contribute to FootBridge’s daily operations?

My primary responsibility as billing and accounts receivable coordinator is to keep our billing information precise to prevent any disruptions or delays in payments. I also focus on tracking purchase orders and balances while maintaining open communication with clients about their funding and payments. Despite the automation of many receivables processes, my deep knowledge of audit trails and the inner workings of our systems enables me to perform exceptionally well. On a side note, our teamwork here is exemplary, with everyone contributing to solving problems effectively. When Alisia takes a week-long vacation, we seamlessly cover for one another, ensuring no one is left in the lurch.

Question: What is your secret to staying organized and ensuring timely and accurate invoicing?

Given that I divide my time between the office and remote work, I rely heavily on MS Office products to maintain my organization. One indispensable tool is the Notebook app, where I manage various task lists and weekly billing schedules, often requiring manual updates. During meetings, I jot down real-time notes and outline my weekly tasks. For instance, Monday is dedicated to establishing billing cycles, Tuesday is reserved for accounts receivable research, which involves contacting individuals about pending payments, and both Wednesday and Thursday are centered around billing and invoice dispatching. Meanwhile, Friday is perfect for catching up on miscellaneous items.

Question: To what extent do robust client relationships influence your professional success?

A positive attitude is essential in communication, and I firmly believe that “honey attracts more flies than vinegar.” My role primarily involves interacting with clients and collaborating with colleagues. Given the importance of billing invoices and collecting payments to our company’s success, I must be both organized and approachable. No one likes dealing with a grumpy accounts receivable representative, but it is equally vital to ensure clients pay their bills promptly. Consequently, I always strive to be considerate in my requests and conversations and make it a point to go above and beyond for our clients, as they truly form the core of our business.

Question: What do you find most rewarding about your experience at FootBridge, and can you offer any guidance to those seeking a similar career path?

We recently introduced a direct hire team, which has been incredibly active and brought with it a brand-new billing system. Consequently, I now have specific tasks related to permanent placements that differ from our usual weekly billing activities, and it’s been immensely satisfying to check these new and exciting projects off my list—not because I see them as a chore but as a huge accomplishment.

For anyone in a similar career, it’s essential to be comfortable with both working on and learning new systems. While many staffing firms may utilize similar software, being adept at learning and adapting to new programs is invaluable.

Furthermore, strong communication skills are crucial in this industry. You must be tuned to the tone of your emails, as they are a primary mode of correspondence with clients. I also recommend trying to accommodate your clients’ preferences as much as possible—some may have unique billing requests, and it’s just the way it goes. By catering to their needs effectively, you can expedite processes in the accounts payable department as well.

Question: As a goal-driven individual, what does this work mean to you, and what additional aspirations are on your radar?

We’re continuously growing, and soon,  expanding our accounting team may become necessary. If so, I eagerly anticipate adding “manager” to my title one day. I’m also fortunate to work alongside women who inspire and support me; rather than being competitive, they encourage my professional development. Emily, our CFO,  in particular, motivates me to acquire new skills, participate in webinars, and pursue my career goals. She trusts her team implicitly, avoiding micromanagement and relying on us to resolve issues independently.

Ultimately, this role allows me to witness the direct impact of my efforts—seeing the invoices I send out translate into incoming revenue is immensely gratifying. Meeting deadlines results in immediate financial rewards, enabling the company to maintain superior operations. The importance of my work is evident: if I falter, we’ll have difficulties. So, there’s a deep sense of fulfillment in knowing my contributions keep the company running smoothly and inspire the sales team. Anything beyond that is a bonus. I am truly passionate about this company and eagerly anticipate a long, fulfilling career here.

Meet Briana Lowe, Senior Administrative Assistant

Meet Briana Lowe, Senior Administrative Assistant

The FootBridge admin team is the glue that keeps us together, from our business development team to our recruiters, payroll processing, and more. That’s why we’re celebrating senior administrative assistant Briana Lowe, who takes care of so many moving parts in our office. The recruiters, administrative staff, sales team, and executives sincerely appreciate her contributions and thoroughly enjoyed interviewing her about her experience with us. Continue reading to learn how Briana gets the job done!

Question: As the initial point of contact for clients and visitors, you hold a pivotal role in fostering a warm and inviting atmosphere at FootBridge. How does this experience resonate with you?

Briana: I genuinely cherish my role as a staffing firm administrator and relish the opportunity to demonstrate to candidates that we’re genuine individuals, not automated systems. It’s important to me that everyone feels at ease reaching out with questions, particularly those who are new to the workforce or for whom English is a second language. Reflecting on my own experience as a newcomer, I understand that the initial onboarding paperwork can be daunting. However, this initial hurdle shouldn’t discourage anyone from seeking contract employment.

As an example, I recently had the pleasure of assisting a candidate in person, guiding him meticulously through each step of the paperwork process using our dedicated laptop, which we have in the office to simplify and ensure accessibility for everyone. Recognizing that Docusign can be cumbersome on mobile devices—and which might be all some candidates have access to —I warmly invite everyone to contact me for any kind of support and want them to know I am always here to help.

Question: Could you describe a typical day in your role and elaborate on the importance of effective communication in your position as a senior administrative assistant in the fast-paced staffing industry?

Briana: At FootBridge, we meticulously manage every aspect behind the scenes to guarantee successful candidate placements and their well-being during their tenure with us. Before a candidate arrives at a client site, I handle the distribution of tax forms, background checks, direct deposit forms, and any necessary screening tests, coupled with a video identification call. Given that we oversee hundreds of contract employees at any given time, we maintain a comprehensive database for each candidate, complete with a checklist of pending items. If even the smallest detail is missing, you can be sure I’m promptly reaching out to inform the candidate so there’s no compromising their employment.  When I’m not on calls or dispatching welcome packages, I dedicate my time to updating this database, which I affectionately refer to as my alter ego.

Question: Maintaining momentum while assisting both our internal team and contract employees requires a blend of patience and meticulous organization. How do you manage it all seamlessly?

Briana: Since joining FootBridge in 2018, I’ve come to see my colleagues as teammates who consistently look out for one another’s well-being. The pace here is breakneck, with new hires and contract endings occurring regularly. To keep everyone aligned, I utilize the database as a comprehensive checklist that ensures the recruiters, sales team, and other staff members stay coordinated. Our culture is one of mutual support, too. If someone needs paperwork sent out at 5:45 pm on a Friday, they can rely on me to get it done, even at the end of a long week. This dedication is mutual, as we all prioritize each other’s needs. When challenges arise, the entire team collaborates to find solutions. Tasks that may seem complex to the sales team are often quick fixes for me, and I relish the opportunity to be the go-to problem solver.

Question: On the topic of problem-solving, what elements of your position provide you with the greatest fulfillment, and in what ways have you evolved since you initially assumed your role as an administrative assistant in the staffing industry?

Briana: Although it may seem trivial, completing a task in this bustling work environment is immensely satisfying. The gratitude from my colleagues makes helping out particularly fulfilling, and it instills in me a profound sense of pride knowing my contributions are valued. Rather than having a sales team member suggest a contract can wait because they see I’m busy, I relish diving into it immediately for them.

On another note, transitioning to this role was a significant shift for me. With a background in waitressing and some human resources experience but no college education, I was initially apprehensive about stepping into this field. However, Todd and Di recognized my potential and helped me reach my goals. After about a year of adaptation, I feel incredibly confident in communicating with candidates. Tasks that once seemed daunting, like drafting a candidate email, are now second nature, and I’m happy to say I’m fully immersed in this role and eagerly anticipate the opportunity to expand my skills and contributions further here.

Additionally, despite not having the opportunity to attend college, I eagerly anticipate enhancing my skills through various certificate courses and seminars. Education is not a straight path but rather a lifelong journey of self-improvement. Also worth mentioning is that Massachusetts, where I live and work, recently approved MassReconnect, a program that offers the opportunity to earn a degree or certificate for free, as well as costs related to books and supplies. To enroll, one must be 25 years old on the first day of class and show proof of residency.

Question: Your success is a testament to the power of a positive mindset in achieving one’s ambitions. What additional guidance would you offer to those currently seeking employment?

Briana: I would tell others not to give up and not to set themselves back because they think they lack experience and, therefore, “don’t stand a chance against other people.” Also, don’t say, “Why should I even apply?” Instead, have faith that others will see you as a hard worker and be open to receiving help from others. You never know where it will get you.

Question: Since you began your journey with FootBridge, technology has evolved dramatically. How has this transformation influenced your role, and are there any other transformations you want to mention?

Briana:  FootBridge has always remained consistent with technological advancements, especially AI. In addition to an expansive candidate log-in, where they can access their forms, pay information, and more, the number one reason we can work remotely is our affiliation with cloud computing, Ring Central, and video calls. Being able to transfer calls when I’m not in the office is a great advantage because it means getting to candidates faster rather than leaving a voicemail and then having to check messages. I like to say that everything we do here is for our clients.

Meet Alisia Ortiz, Payroll Coordinator

Meet Alisia Ortiz, Payroll Coordinator

Today, we’re thrilled to spotlight Alisia Ortiz, our dedicated payroll coordinator who has been a vital part of FootBridge since 2015. Describing Alisia’s impact on managing payroll for hundreds of contractors nationwide barely scratches the surface of her contributions. Her daily tasks are a whirlwind of phone calls, resolving contractor inquiries, and upholding the high standards of our staffing services with every job placement. Beyond her professional duties, Alisia infuses the workplace with unparalleled positivity and joy. She is a staunch advocate for women and minorities in the workplace and an avid learner, currently pursuing her Master of Science in Accounting with a focus on Business Administration. Her role is not just about processing payroll but also about ensuring the satisfaction of our contract employees, a task she approaches with a customer-centric mindset. Continue reading to uncover more about Alisia’s exceptional payroll expertise and how she ensures the satisfaction of our contract employees.

Question: While you might operate behind the scenes at FootBridge, your role as a payroll coordinator is crucial in guaranteeing that contract employees receive timely payments. What does this process entail?

Alisia: Countless steps are implemented to ensure our payroll system operates seamlessly. While some tasks require manual intervention, the majority of our payroll process is automated to minimize errors – including a contractor log-in where contractors may record their hours worked. We also meticulously handle the onboarding process in collaboration with our administrative team, making sure that taxes, benefits, insurance, sick leave, PTO, and the correct state of employment are accurately entered into our database.

Regarding my approach, I adopt a careful stance, mindful that inconsistencies can surface without warning. Take, for example, a contractor who might inadvertently provide two distinct addresses on their documentation. It’s crucial for us to log their permanent address correctly, as this is where tax forms are dispatched. On the subject of taxes, when registering to operate in a new state (we are authorized to work in all 50 states), we are also obligated to remit quarterly tax payments, so once a contract employee works for us, we notify the state.

Question: Given that contract employees often operate across various locations, how important is open communication to the payroll process?

Alisia:  Effective communication is crucial for ensuring that contractors receive their payments. This process involves setting up direct deposits, issuing pay stubs, and mailing manual checks. Accuracy is constantly verified, as human errors can occur, such as a contractor entering the wrong week. Given the frequent onboarding of new hires, it’s vital to explain the time entry system and reassure them that support is always available.

Additionally, managing taxes is a significant responsibility. For instance, if a contract employee works out of state and receives a per diem, I inform them that this amount is non-taxable for the first year as a government incentive for working away from home, but it becomes taxable after that. We also handle various notifications, such as those related to child support, wage garnishments, tax levies, and pay discrepancies. Sometimes, contractors need to be made aware of these issues, necessitating clear and prompt communication.

Question: As the primary point of contact for inquiries regarding contract employees’ payroll, you must handle a wide range of questions. Could you share some of the most common ones you encounter?

Alisia:  Our engineers frequently find themselves working across multiple locations, conducting fieldwork at a plant before returning home to analyze data for an additional four weeks. Similarly, contractors might shift between sites while technically remaining on the same project. It is crucial to document these movements as they significantly affect tax considerations. For example, an individual might spend three months in New York and then relocate to New Jersey. Therefore, maintaining open communication between our sales and recruiting teams, along with the direct manager of the contract employees, is essential. Doing so ensures a smoother tax filing process in April for the contract employees, as having this information in advance prevents the need to open a case later.

Question: You’re on the verge of marking a decade with FootBridge! What aspects of your work bring you the greatest joy?

What I truly appreciate is the variety each day brings, accompanied by its unique challenges. Mondays are dedicated to preparing payroll and handling wage garnishments. When a new client comes on board, I guide them through entering hours and expenses. Tuesdays involve processing payroll, while Wednesdays are reserved for making journal entries. Additionally, I assist with closing the month’s financials. I am also grateful for the career growth opportunities at FootBridge and for having a manager who invests in my development rather than leaving me stagnant. It’s not always easy, but it’s always rewarding.

Question: Finally, given your enthusiasm for championing women and minorities in the workplace, what crucial insights do you wish to share with others?

Alisia: I wish for women across all cultures to understand that if they harbor a dream and possess the determination to pursue it, everything becomes possible. Equally crucial is the act of voicing one’s aspirations, as you never know what kind of opportunities might be waiting just around the corner. For example, I felt the need to enhance my tax and accounting expertise. Therefore, following numerous discussions with our CFO, Emily Ingersoll, and conversations with friends and family, I decided to enroll in Merrimack College’s online Fall 2024 curriculum to earn my Master of Science in Accounting with a focus on Business Administration.

As a minority, I also believe it is essential to make one’s voice heard. My ambition is to grow alongside FootBridge and remain a valuable asset to the team, but I couldn’t have done so if I never spoke up. Concurrently, I am committed to raising awareness about the importance of women and minorities in the workplace. I hope my journey can inspire others to achieve similar success, whether through internships at FootBridge or by engaging with underserved communities to host job fairs, skill-building workshops, and more.

On a personal note, when I confided in my daughter about my contemplation of pursuing a master’s degree, which had been on my mind for several years, she encouraged me with a heartfelt, “You can do it!” Her words have been a tremendous source of motivation, reminding me that everyone benefits from having a cheerleader in their corner. For instance, Emily and I often discuss the value I contribute to the company, and as I continue to grow personally and professionally, I anticipate numerous opportunities opening up for me at FootBridge. Achieving a managerial role would be a dream come true, and I am genuinely excited about the future that awaits.
