5 Ways FootBridge Advises Clients on How to Make Every Project Count

From contract to direct hire staffing, FootBridge not only places candidates at client sites across multiple industries but provides in-depth insight concerning the cost of labor, living, and regional costs and why making timely decisions about a great candidate is important. Making it happen are our recruiters and business development managers who’ve spent thousands of hours consulting with nationwide clients across the oil and gas, energy services, process industries, manufacturing, power and utilities, and commercial construction since 2001. In addition to our years of experience and niche staffing protocols, the following expert advice is part of what makes us unique.

Contract staffing labor cost expertise

When a client calls for a contractor to work on an energy project in Hawaii, we know the cost of living could be 3x as much as what the client may be paying for the same position in Missouri, where the average mean house price is just below $200k. Alternatively, in Hawaii, the average mean cost of a home is closer to $800k. Therefore, in a situation such as this, we advise raising the hourly rate to accommodate the cost-of-living difference before we start sourcing candidates. In addition to providing insight into the cost of labor by region, our team expertly advises clients on whether they’re paying too much to ensure they remain competitive in their industry – it’s all in a day’s work!

Understanding tax codes

Since FootBridge is set up to employ contractors in all 50 states, we can help clients develop projects anywhere where they may not otherwise be set up to do so. Also, some cities, like Pittsburgh, mandate codes, and our team can advise on the process.

Regional and local knowledge

In addition to understanding tax codes and being able to do business nationwide, FootBridge hires local experts who understand the market and know local building codes, permitting, and restrictions which are especially important in commercial construction work. We’ve also been doing this work long enough to know you can’t physically pour a foundation in the winter in Alaska, nor can you do it in some areas of the country experiencing a rainy season, and thus advise on changing thought processes and expectations.

Timely hiring decisions

Another situation where we advise clients is the time spent considering a candidate for a position. It’s a tight labor market, and we’ve had numerous situations where a company lost out on a great contractor because they took too long in the decision-making process. Ultimately, time is one of the highest costs during the hiring process, as every day a position is open represents lost productivity.

Industry Knowledge

In addition to being experts in the industries we work in, our recruiters often have more extensive contacts, stronger relationships, and more powerful networks than generalist recruiters who spread their resources over a much broader territory. At FootBridge, we’re also fully embedded in the marketplace and well-versed in technical industry terminology, job requirements, and hiring obstacles. For instance, hiring managers must often explain the differences between project controllers when working with recruiters, but at FootBridge, our recruiters specialize in finding the energy contract talent our clients need, so you’ll always have experienced professionals ready to step into any project. In addition to advising clients about market trends, we provide helpful tips to candidates. Contact us today to learn more.

Commercial Construction and Staffing Industry Trends for 2022

The commercial construction and staffing industry has faced a year of innovation and new challenges—from COVID-19-related project delays and supply chain disruptions to the “great resignation” and a brief recession. Despite these setbacks, analysts anticipate growth in non-residential construction for 2022. As a staffing firm serving this sector, we wanted to weigh in on what these trends mean moving forward.

First, the pandemic’s start did see some project slowdowns as nonessential projects were placed on hold. However, as a staffing firm in the thick of hiring, it didn’t take long for jobs to ramp back up. The most significant difference we saw this past year is that our commercial construction candidates who have been in the industry for upwards of twenty years aren’t necessarily taking assignments like they used to due to ongoing COVID concerns.

Pre-pandemic, these candidates were more willing to travel for a project that may last six months. Now, we’re finding their families have more of an impact on their decisions, and rightfully so. Although COVID booster shots are becoming more available, this scenario could change.

Savvy Staffing Strategies

“We have an entire pool of people who a couple of years ago would have considered four or five different construction projects. But now,” says FootBridge General Manager Joe Squires, “That isn’t the case. They’re asking themselves if it’s worth it to take a temporary job that takes them away from their family for a months-long project. People are afraid of getting sick and bringing the illness home to their loved ones. So, COVID is a real factor when it comes to placements in the commercial construction industry right now.”

Next, while the news headlines indicate commercial construction starts will improve in 2022, there are still more jobs than qualified candidates. Therefore, those in commercial construction businesses have had to get creative when finding talent, and that’s where a staffing firm partnership comes in.  Especially since it’s a candidate’s market, clients have to be quick in their decisions when hiring top talent.

Why staffing firms?

It’s hard to know if a staffing firm is suitable for a commercial construction company until we speak to them. But what we can tell you is that here at FootBridge, recruiting is our primary focus. More than likely, we have run a similar search for a candidate just like the one a client requests on any given day.  So, we have a good idea of who is available to fill a position.

“If your one job is to make the perfect cup of coffee, you will put all your resources into that assignment,” says Squires.  “You’d find your favorite bean, maybe even a grinder, and the perfect coffee machine for the best brew.  But that’s not how it works with companies hiring for large, capital-budget construction projects. Human resource managers are the ones taking on recruiting, but they also have many other essential responsibilities that can take away from their efforts. It’s why they like to integrate staffing firms into their hiring strategy.”

Of course, we’ve come across clients who worry that even a staffing firm will have difficulties sourcing suitable commercial construction candidates. But what these firms may not realize is that we are deeply vested in the market. There’s also no need to endure multiple approvals because we have already vetted the candidate. Most of our clients hire candidates based on our recommendation saving them time and money.

To summarize, positive growth is happening in commercial construction, and our recruiters are ready to tackle any job our clients put in front of us. We are looking forward to 2022, and here for our clients when they need us and deliver significant results. Visit our job board for a complete list of commercial construction openings.

A Q&A Discussion about Staffing in the Commercial Construction Industry

Over the past few weeks, we’ve talked about the benefits a staffing agency partnership can bring to commercial construction firms. From cost savings to the speed of delivery, flexibility, and industry knowledge, the FootBridge Companies provide unending support to our clients and candidates. Over the past 20 years, many of our clients are repeat customers. They have become close personal friends as well.  From helping to manage critical project details, including decommissioning work, government construction, energy services, and commercial construction school projects – we’ve done it all.

To sum up our recent series of articles, we’ve formed a Q&A segment to answer our client and candidates’ most pressing questions. Take a look!

Q: What’s the difference between contract hire and direct hire?

A: When you partner with a staffing firm like the FootBridge, we work to find you contract workers who may only work on a project for 3 to 6 months. Sometimes it’s a shorter period and other times it’s longer. The benefit, however, is that your company does not have to cover health insurance, medical leave, vacation, and sick time. That’s what we’re here for. A direct hire is when your company does the hiring and pays a candidate a salary direct from your organization. You find the candidate, and you do the background checks, interviews, and onboarding.

Q: What are some benefits of a contract hire?

A: With contract hires, your company is not committed to paying an annual salary or benefits. Instead, the staffing firm pays the contractor an hourly rate. It assumes responsibility for health benefits, vacation, sick time, and more.

Q: What if we want to make a permanent hire. Can we do so through a staffing company?

A: Yes. While the FootBridge Companies focus is mostly on placing contract employees, some of our clients prefer to hire direct. All this means is that instead of the individual working for FootBridge on assignment with our client, he or she works for the client directly. Rather than making a profit on each hour the person works, we are paid a one-time fee based on a percentage of annual salary for the first year, usually 25%.

Q: Why is contract hiring faster than direct?

A: You can receive hundreds of responses from a single ad for a position. Instead of allocating your own resources on the hiring process, a staffing firm will identify candidates and expedite the interviewing process on your behalf.  We can have several viable candidate profiles ready for your review within a few hours of your request. And, most companies we speak to hire people after a short phone interview process.

Q: We heard it’s more expensive to work with a staffing firm, is that true?

A: No. In many cases, it is less expensive to hire contract workers because when you factor in the cost of onboarding and benefits, the pay rate is, in fact, higher.  On average it costs 1.25 to 1.4 times a person’s salary to hire them. With contract work, you will pay a markup fee, but the staffing firm is also taking on the burden of the employee’s “cost.”

Q: How do staffing firm recruiters find qualified candidates? Isn’t it just a database search?

A: There’s a lot more than database searches that go into finding the right candidate for a potential job. Recruiters spend the bulk of their time sourcing, pre-screening, interviewing candidates, and investing in the client relationship.

Q: What if my commercial construction firm needs someone on-site the next day, can you make that happen?

A: Yes. Our recruiters can send you several qualified candidate profiles already in that location or one who is ready to go there.

Q: What happens if a candidate shows up at the job site, but doesn’t work to our satisfaction?

A: Just like we can get a contractor on-site the next day, a staffing agency can let someone go as needed too. One phone call to Footbridge is all it takes, and the person won’t be on-site the next day. If someone doesn’t live up to your expectations, we will let them go immediately, with absolutely no cost to you within the first week.

Q: What if a project is located out of state? Can a staffing firm manage still manage the hiring process?

A: Yes. Hiring and recruitment practices can vary by state. A client may have to get set up with a state just to be able to provide employment in the area. This is not the case with the FootBridge Companies, as we are already established to work in all 50 states.

Q: How knowledgeable are staffing firms when it comes to commercial construction? This is a very specified industry.

A: We can’t speak for other staffing firms, but the FootBridge Companies knows construction. Our team routinely visits sites when it’s safe to do so (pending COVID-19). We also understand your space and the technical aspects of client projects. It’s what we do. In addition to commercial and manufacturing, our specialties include energy and industrial chemicals.
